You know what one of the most entertaining and gratifying things in the world is? Watching an artist break into a huge smile over Skype because she’s so excited about making sales to people via email. I’ve seen it over and over again, and it never gets old.
When I was in college, being a business coach was not my goal. I was a performer. An artist.
Looking back, it makes some sense. My classmates in school thought I was the weird guy because I was reading business books and playing around with blogging. Their tune changed when I stepped in to help with some of the school shows and we started selling out the venues.
I guess you might say that I’ve always had an interest in how business and money works. I’ve always wondered why some people have massive success, and others don’t.
In the time I’ve been doing this, I’ve recognized patterns in what works in art business, and what definitely does not. Unfortunately, most artists don’t have the time or the access to speak to the dozens of successful artists I’ve been fortunate enough to work with, so they flounder a lot.
It’s time to stop floundering all over the place with your art business. You need direction and guidance on what steps to take next.
Sorry to be a little blunt, but it’s true!
It’s not your fault, really. You’ve spent years and thousands of dollars on artistic training. Your whole world is taken up by making your art. Your time and thoughts are occupied by family, day job(s), and perhaps enough of a social life to keep you sane.
How would your life be different if you could sell the art that you make?
What kind of art could you make if you had all of the money that you needed?
Here’s a few questions that I discuss with artists all of the time:
- Is your gallery or dealer disappointing you?
- Are you having trouble defining what makes you different and unique?
- Do you still kinda hope that you’ll be “discovered?”
- Do you know who your ideal collectors are?
- Are you looking for a road map?
Business Coaching for Artists
I’ve helped dozens of artists from all over the world grow their art business online, and I’d love to take you through my flagship coaching program Authentic Marketing for Artists.
If you’re going to work with a business coach, you want it to be someone who understands the specific needs of artists and someone who isn’t just making it up on the fly. My program Authentic Marketing for Artists has been developed through five years of working with artists.
We focus on helping the artist get clear on what their unique value is, who their ideal collectors are, and how to tell their own unique story.
What Does Art Business Coaching Look Like?
Generally speaking, it means phone calls and personalized homework.
Before our first call, I’ll have you fill out a business coaching intake form that tells me about where you are at with your business. This lets us hit that first session running with suggestions on how to make your business grow. We’ll discuss some options and I’ll give you some homework to go do on your business.
In between, I’ll be available for answering questions via email and we can jump on a quick fine-tuning call.
For most new coaching clients, we do a package of 4 sessions where I have you walk through the Authentic Marketing for Artists material. This is a series of videos and worksheets that will help you get clear on your goals and understand how different aspects of your business come together.
After you’ve watched a few of those videos and done the homework, we’ll have our second session to discuss results and figure out next steps. Usually that means going through the next set of coaching videos. Sometimes that means supplementary exercises or materials.
